Cablevison…..Need I say more?

Filed under: Fucktard, Internet — The Mad Admin @ 12:49 pm

News 12 Block Screen

I recently upgraded (Note I said upgraded not switched, it is a definate upgrade) from Cablevision to Verizon FIOS.  Then I tried to go to the news 12 site and I got this message blocking me from getting access.

Cablevison  are you so scared of compitition that you are closing your doors?  Saying “No You Can’t See This!!!”

They are asking for $4.95 a month to get access to the site?  One of the reasons I left Cablevision was because they nickle and dime you.  This is one more reason that I will never go back.  Never.

“News 12 Only on Cablevision, never on phone company TV” should we amend that to unless you pay us some money?

You are going against the grain.  Do you see CNN, MSNBC, ABC,CBS, BBC saying not you have to pay if you want to see our content?

No You Don’t!!!! And their content is a lot better.

I have not given one of these out in a while but Cablevision you are my Fucktard of the week!!!

In You Face MySpace

Filed under: Internet — The Mad Admin @ 8:08 am

Facebook has caught up to Myspace in the number of unique hits/month.

This was reported today on TechCrunch

I am not surprised.  Facebook is way better than the old and ailing Myspace.  As people move to Facebook, sooner or later their friends will move.

Right now I feel that Facebook will become the standard "My Page" site on the Internet.  Until the next big thing comes along.

This is not only because I have joined the Facebook Developer Group in NY either.  I really believe it.

What do you think?

New Host

Filed under: Internet — The Mad Admin @ 10:41 am

I just got a new host for one of my sites HOSTGATOR.

Pretty good plan.  No set up fee and a 45 day money back guarantee.  I needed a host that had PHP 5 installed so I could work with web orb.  These guys fit the bill and gave copious amounts of storage and bandwidth.  Plus the latest version on CPANEL and Fantastico.

Use the code wordpress to start the first month for 1 cent.  Yes 1/100th of a dollar.

I highly recommend this host.

Verizon Getting Into Murky Waters

Filed under: Internet, Verizon — The Mad Admin @ 11:10 am

No more blank could not find site errors. Verizon is taking this oprotunity to direct you back to a Verizon Search page.

From DSL REPORTS

Verizon has been implementing a DNS redirection service for select DSL and FiOS customers. The service redirects users who mistype URLs to an Verizon-run search page (complete with referral links) instead of giving a traditional error message. While Verizon insists the service was created to help users, it’s really just a revenue generator. In essence, butterfingers create a revenue stream.

Verizon isn’t alone. ISPs such as Cox, Earthlink and Charter have all tinkered with DNS redirection services. While the majority of users aren’t bothered by them, many users believe they “break” core Internet functionality — causing errors in useful network monitoring tools that require a “clean” ‘net.

Is this breaking the internet or are they offering a service to the internet newbies so they won’t get lost?

I am not sure, but I am leaning towards it being a bad thing a small step in the wrong direction. This small step for unknown pages, what is to stop them from putting other entries for sites the Government or Verizon doesn’t like. Very murky waters…

Josh Wolf Free—First Amendment Weakened

Filed under: Blog, Internet, Law, News, gov — The Mad Admin @ 11:29 pm

From CNN

Read It Yourself…It might get harder to find people to report it for you.

Story Highlights
• Freelance journalist cuts deal with prosecutors, walks out of prison
• Joshua Wolf refuses to testify before grand jury about protest
• Under deal, Wolf agreed to provide uncut video.
• His spent 226 days behind bars — a record for a journalist held in contempt

DUBLIN, Califiornia (AP) — Video blogger Joshua Wolf, who spent a record-setting stint behind bars for refusing to turn over his footage of a chaotic 2005 street protest, walked out of prison after cutting a deal with prosecutors.

Wolf, 24, said Tuesday he was looking forward to “pizza and a beer” after having spent 226 days in prison — more than any journalist who’s refused to testify.

Under the deal with prosecutors, Wolf agreed to turn over the uncut video, which he also posted on his Web site Tuesday. But he refused to testify before the grand jury about the events at the protest or the identities of participants.

“I will not under any circumstances testify before a grand jury,” Wolf said.

His prison time surpassed the previous record set by Vanessa Leggett, a Houston-based freelancer who served 168 days in 2001 and 2002 for declining to reveal unpublished material about a murder case.

Wolf had been found in contempt for refusing to obey a subpoena to turn over his video from a July 2005 protest during the G-8 economic summit where anarchists were suspected of vandalizing a San Francisco police car. One city officer was struck during the rally and his skull was fractured.

Wolf, a freelancer, sold some footage to San Francisco television stations and posted it on his Web site, but refused to turn over unpublished material.

The footage Wolf posted online Tuesday does not capture the alleged crimes authorities are investigating, defense lawyer David Greene said. Wolf’s lawyers had argued that the First Amendment gave him the right to refuse the subpoena to turn over the rest of his tape.

“Now that the fences of the law and the tradition that has protected the press are broken down, the people are the victims. The First Amendment, as I read it, was designed precisely to prevent that tragedy,” Wolf said in prepared statement he read Tuesday on the steps of San Francisco City Hall.

California’s shield law allows reporters to keep sources and unpublished material secret. But there is no federal shield law protecting reporters from federal investigations.

The National Writer’s Union, which represents freelance writers, said in a statement that Wolf should never have been jailed.

“The abuses visited on Josh and other journalists are part of an effort by governments at all levels to control the volume, flow and content of the information that reaches the public,” the union said.

Want a free audio book

Filed under: Audio Books, Geek, Internet — The Mad Admin @ 12:40 pm

Audio Books done by Librivox

Open source project. People take books in the public domain(remember that Disney, it is what used to let people take what was built before and use it without having to pay lawyers and dead authors…but enough of that) and read them, recording the sound into an audio format.

So knock the classic disco off your IPOD and put some Mark Twain on there instead.

cNet::Judge rules COPA unconstitutional

Filed under: Internet, Law, Rants — The Mad Admin @ 10:58 am

A federal judge has ruled that the Child Online Protection Act, which would have criminalized much of the sexual content on the Internet, violates First and Fifth Amendment rights.

The 1998 U.S. law included both civil and criminal penalties for those who make sexually explicit materials freely available on the Web.

So it is up to the parents to parent the kids, it is not the governments job to turn the world into some Disney Version of reality. This is a good thing. People have to take personal responsibility and stop saying someone should protect the kids. That someone is you, not the government. Now get off your ass and see what your kid is surfing.

Music Industry Trying To Kill The Internet Star

Filed under: Internet, Music, RIAA — The Mad Admin @ 9:07 am

Forbes Article

National Public Radio, and groups representing both large and small companies providing music broadcasts online were among those asking the Copyright Royalty Board to reconsider key parts of its March 2 ruling.

That ruling, the challenging parties say, would greatly increase the amount of royalties that online music broadcasters would have to pay to record labels and performers as well as put unreasonable demands on them to track how many songs were listened to by exactly how many individuals online.

Just what is the Music Industry thinking. Here they have internet stations willing to play the music, something they used to bribe radio to do not so many decades before. And they want to make it hard to impossible for that to happen.

They are afraid that people will record the streamed music. I listen to Internet Radio and I don’t record it. Lets face it the person that is going to steal music is going to do it when the music is streamed or when it is no longer streamed. A Thief will always find a way, thats why they keep making better locks. But some people are locking their back door while leaving the front door wide open. The biggest seller of music without protection is the music industry itself. CDs. They get Ripped, They get swapped, and the music industry turns a blind eye.

So Music Industry smarten up. Don’t wage war with music fans, don’t complain about internet radio while you publish the biggest library of unprotected music in the world without regard for security. Realize your market place has changed, your consumers wants and needs have changed and it is time to meet them or get ready for someone to come along and change the whole dynamic leaving you behind.

It is your choice, Evolve to adapt to the new reality or become the bones in the museum.
