Pork for IT.

Filed under: I.T., Something to Talk About, gov — The Mad Admin @ 10:30 am

This is an amazing list from Cnet on Pork in the Federal Budget focused on the Tech world.

Tech-related pork

How does Congress spend money on technology research, development and education? As with traditional “pork barrel spending,” much money gets earmarked for projects of the home districts of politicians who head the right subcommittee. From no-flush toilets to spray paint simulators, local businesses and educational organizations are jockeying for their place at the trough.

Some Pranks That Have Been Played

Filed under: Digg, Fun, Something to Talk About, What Do You Think? — The Mad Admin @ 2:53 pm

During my time in the I.T. field I have seen many pranks played by people using computers.

These are some of my favorites that come to mind:

Changing the file that is associated with an Icon:

This was one that went wrong. Back in the days of DOS, yes DOS, we had programs that would launch via *.BAT (batch) files. Well one of the computer savey Accounting people, we will call him AL, decided to play a joke. He edited the BAT file on the M:\ drive Making it Echo out an insult to the user that clicked. Funny Joke. Except he did not realize M:\ was a network drive and everyone in accounting was getting that meesage when they tried to open the accounting package. He scrambled, screwed up some more and now caused the program to crash on launch because the command line switches got screwed up.

Some how I knew who to go to when I saw an accounting error. I fixed it and kept it quiet. To protect ourselves we later brought AL into the I.T. Department.

Limit connection speed to the internet

One IT member slowed another member down to a crawl using Group Policy. The affected party would look around and could not understand why he was going slow. He troubleshoot all day long while the person who was doing the prank sat next to him and played dumb.

The victim did figure it out. When he changed machines and the problem followed or use a test account and the problem disappeared.

Redirect favorite website to another site:

Edited the LMHOST file and made entries for CNN, The Atlanta Braves, and Google redirecting them to, lets just say the person could have been fired for what came on the screen. The Guy though he had a virus. Ran scans, did HiJackThis, shit he was going crazy. We Stopped him before he just re-ghosted his machine.

Worked Overnight Support

Worked for a Very large Voip on the overnight shift. Around 3AM people got tired. I’d wait until they were asleep at the PC then I would BLAST the air horn. Man people jumped. They did not fall back to sleep after that ;)

Those are the ones that come to my mind. What war stories do you have?

Top 10 IT request…For unneeded equipment.

Filed under: I.T., Something to Talk About, Top 10, What Do You Think? — The Mad Admin @ 9:47 am

All are based on real requests made by our IT Department.

10 I need a Mac so I can learn to troubleshoot the marketing department.
09 Using surround sound will let me hear error alerts much better.
08 I need a wide screen laptop so I can fit more work on my desktop.
07 I know I am a network admin, but the webmaster training will teach me to script the server.
06 Yes I need the water cooling system, how else am I going to over clock the server?
05 I need a server at my desk with plenty of storage, so I can backup the network, nothing to do with those movie downloads. Oh and it needs a DVD burner as well.
04 Three screens is a minimum. Any less and I’d never get my work done.
03 I need the new Pocket PC phone. Yeah the one that can play music. No I need it so I can use…Remote Desktop, yeah remote desktop protocol.
02 I need to upgrade my Graphics Card, the Radeon X1900 should do well and help me open emails much quicker.
01 I know my PC is 2 months old, but it is too slow. I need the new Duo processor and several gigs of Ram. It’s the only way I can keep up with the work flow around here.

* Clear taxonomy of headings, and lots of them
* Writing clearly and succinctly
* No long, unbroken paragraphs or tracts of text.
* Preferring bulleted lists with clear points to paragraphs.
* Use of emphasis in formatting to make important things clear

Check it out. Yes it is a short read.

WordPress 2.02

Filed under: Blog, Something to Talk About, WordPress — The Mad Admin @ 11:06 pm

Just did my upgrade. It was released over 2 weeks ago. If you use Wordpress do the upgrade. Very easy.

WordPress

An important security issue has been brought to the attention of the WordPress team and we have worked diligently to bring you a new stable release that addresses it. Our latest version 2.0.2 contains several bugfixes and security fixes.

The problems addressed are unannounced XSS issues privately discovered and reported to the WordPress team. Thanks to Michael Boman, Mark Jaquith, Robert Deaton, and David House for assisting with this release.

Just a quick note: this is different than the snake-oil reports that went out on some security lists a few days ago. There were a couple, but they were either not actual security problems, too small to warrant a release, or just patently false. Remember: just because you read it on a mailing list doesn’t mean that it’s true. We’d be the first people to panic if there was an actual problem.

As always, when something serious crosses our desks we jump on it and get a well-tested release out as soon as possible.
